On Tuesday, Princess Charlotte made a rare solo appearance with her parents Prince William and Kate Middleton to watch the Commonwealth Games. Without her brothers Prince George and Prince Louis, Charlotte accompanied her parents to Birmingham’s Sandwell Aquatics Center where they watched swim races. In a black-and-white striped dress, Charlotte made an array of emotional faces as she watched the competition. According to Hello, she rolled her eyes at a comment from her father, but smiled when British swimmer Luke Turley finished a 1500 meter heat and qualified for the finals.
Later, the family traveled to watch gymnasts compete in the the men’s horizontal bar final and women’s Floor Exercise finals. She also joined Kate and William as they met with a group of athletes for a sports and nutrition workshop. The workshop was run by Kate’s patronage SportsAid, which helps talented future Olympians and Paralympians fund their training. Along with the Commonwealth Games, SportsAid is sponsoring a program called Team England Futures to help future athletes understand what elite competition is like from the inside.

Though Prince George went with his parents to the Women’s Euro Cup final on Sunday, Charlotte is the Cambridge kid who seems to be the biggest sports fan. In June, William told members of the England Women’s soccer team that she was a “budding star” in soccer, according to Hello. “Charlotte wanted me to tell you that she is really good at goal,” he added. “She said, ‘Please tell them that.’”
But on Tuesday, she indicated that she might have a different favorite sport, according to Tim Lawler, the chief executive of SportsAid. “She really, really loved seeing the swimming, but she’s interested in the gymnastics,” he said. “While they’re trying lots of different sports at home, I understand, when I asked her about sport she answered very easily and said, ‘It’s gymnastics that I like.’”
Charlotte, William, and Kate were joined at the aquatics center by Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex. The couple has had a full schedule for every day of the Games so far, and photos from the swim competition this morning show that they were just as engaged and excited as Charlotte. Later on Sophie and Edward were joined by their children, Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn, to watch a match of women’s field hockey.
