A tantalizing trailer for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s new Netflix show dropped Thursday morning – just as Prince William and Princess Kate were preparing to carry out a series of engagements in Boston ahead of Friday’s Earthshot Prize awards ceremony.

In what is being seen as more than coincidental timing, Netflix released the trailer for Harry and Meghan’s forthcoming documentary on social media on the second day of William and Kate’s highly important visit to the United States. The series has been directed by two-time Academy Award-nominated and Emmy-winning director Liz Garbus and is expected to reignite tensions between Harry and the royal family.
The six-part documentary series will premiere later this month when Harry and Meghan will travel to New York to accept an award for taking on institutionalized racism within the royal family.
In the new trailer, Harry and Meghan speak only briefly but their words are significant and suggest that the series will focus on not just their love story, but why they left the royal family. Two of the images shown in the dramatic spot show Meghan in tears, and another of the Duchess of Sussex at Her Majesty The Queen’s funeral. Another image shows the then Duke and Duchess of Cambridge sitting in Westminster Abbey looking stony faced at Harry and Meghan’s last official engagement as working royals in March 2020.
Speaking to camera Harry says, “No one sees what’s happening behind closed doors. I had to do everything I could to protect my family.”
The trailer ends with Meghan saying, “When the stakes are this high, doesn’t it make more sense to hear our story from us?”
The series has been billed as “a never-before-seen look at one of the most-discussed couples in history” with a spokesman for Netflix saying, “In an unprecedented and in-depth documentary series, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex share the other side of their high-profile love story.
“Across six episodes, the series explores the clandestine days of their early courtship and the challenges that led to them feeling forced to step back from their full-time roles in the institution.
“With commentary from friends and family, most of whom have never spoken publicly before about what they witnessed, and historians who discuss the state of the British Commonwealth today and the royal family’s relationship with the press, the series does more than illuminate one couple’s love story, it paints a picture of our world and how we treat each other.”
Although the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were in the UK for the Queen’s funeral, they returned to California without Harry reconciling with his father and brother. And while King Charles III used his speech to the nation to wish his youngest son and daughter-in-law well in America, he has made it clear that there is no way back into the royal family for Harry and Meghan in an official role.
